Singer Sewing Machine Company
Since 1851, the Singer Sewing Machine
Company has dominated the sewing market. Isaac Singer was
a marketing genius who made the Singer name so well known that
many people refer to sewing machines as Singers and really
believe that is the name of the appliance.
In recent years, Singer Sewing Machine
Company has lost its edge due to financial ups and downs.
It has been sold several times and is now owned and operated by
a Chinese conglomerate in China.
This same conglomerate owns the Viking and
Pfaff lines which are manufactured essentially in the same
facility as those belonging to the Singer Sewing Machine
Company.
The quality of the Singer product has
declined as well. Many expert sewing machine dealers
refuse to represent the line due to the preponderance of faulty
machines. Singer once had dealers on every street corner,
but today there are far fewer dealers.
Mass merchandisers rely heavily on the
Singer brand whether you look at Walmart, Kmart, or JoAnn
Fabrics; the Singer brand remains prominent. Generally,
these machines are low end and poor grade machines, however,
Singer does offer some machines that claim advanced features at
far lower prices than other sewing machine lines.
