Sewing Machine Ratings
Consumer Reports and many other review sites
have offered Sewing Machine Ratings, but how dependable are
these reviews.
Over the years I have discovered that if a
user is using a Bernina, they are convinced that it is the best
sewing machine ever made. If they own a Viking, or a
Singer, or a Dressmaker; they believe it is the best ever made
at least in the price range. Why is this the case?
One reason is that often sewing machines are
hyped. When we sold Necchi and Dressmaker sewing machines
we would brag on their solid metal gears, their rugged
construction, and their durability. When we sell Baby
Lock sewing machines we emphasize their overall value of
features, construction, and ease of use. When we sell
Bernina sewing machines, we brag about the CB Hook System or
its advanced capabilities. "Every advanced feature ever
offered on any sewing machine ever made is offered in the new
Bernina 830."
The consumer buys based on what they are
told. We avoid telling customers about flaws, because we
want to make a sale. When dealers make comparisons
between different brands they offer, they have to assess the
interests, needs, and desires of their customer and relate each
machine based on those features they believe their customer
will buy.
For example, if you compare the top end Baby
Lock to the top end Bernina; there is no question that the
Bernina can sew circles around the Baby Lock. It offers
hundreds more stitches, much larger sewing field, unlimited
embroidery field, and more. However, if the customer is
concerned about ease of use; keep away from the Bernina or the
customer will be unhappy. You see, Baby Lock offers a
great machine that is designed to be very easy to use.
Bernina offers a great machine, but you may need a PHD just to
get started. (Maybe a little exaggerated.)
Sewing Machine Ratings the point is whether
you are reading a review or listening to a sales person, take
the Sewing Machine Ratings with a grain of salt. The best
way to get the best Sewing Machine Ratings is to use competing
models for yourself and compare apples to apples.
