Why Learn To Repair Sewing Machines?

It is fun!

Yes, each sewing machine offers its own special adventure. When you set it on the workbench, it sits there full of mystery and possibilities. From your first troubleshooting turn; to the discovery of clues and opening up the machine; the mystery unfolds. Like Indian Jones you explore the challenges and make the wondrous adjustments. But nothing is more satisfying than doing your final sew out and seeing perfect stitches. What was broken and useless is now a wonder - a treasure. It is fun!

Sewing machines are machines. They do not last forever and do require service and repair. Even if it sits in a closet for a year, it needs a tune up before being used again. If it is used frequently, more frequent service is necessary.

From time to time things go wrong. It may be the plight of "Murphy's Law", user error, or just wear and tear; but from time to actual repairs are needed. Sewing machines are machines. Though wondrous and full of creative possibilities, they still break down. When this happens, repair and service are crucial. Somebody has to do the repairs.

If you take it to a professional, it will cost between $100 and $200 for a full service. If there are major problems, broken parts, worn item, or serious issues; it can cost hundreds more.

But the professional will return your sewing machine in good working order ready to sew and sew.

If you fix the sewing machine yourself, you get to enjoy the adventures of repair and service yourself. Plus you save dollars. How much? Whatever you would have paid to the technician.

Sewing machine repair makes a fantastic hobby. When the news gets out that you service and repair sewing machines, people will flock to you. At church, at the store, on the street; wherever you go; you become the one everybody wants to see and talk to. Repairing sewing machines for your friends, neighbors, church groups, quilt guilds, sewing bees, local charities; is fulfilling and satisfying. Plus you are able to service and repair you own sewing machines. Fantastic.

Since the average cost of a standard service is $99.99, you could charge half that and still make a bundle. Profits are super high.

Sewing Machine Repair Business.

&
Job Opportunities Are Plentiful.

How long does it take a technician to perform a tune up? It varies depending on the machine. On average it will take about 2 hours. For example, about half of all machines have nothing actually broken or out of kilter. They just need to be fully serviced.

A few machines will be so badly out of service they are "locked up" or "frozen". These will take longer to service. The more complex a machine; the more time it will require. If there is actually something broken in the machine like a gear or lever, the technician charges extra for parts replacement and added time required for the actual repair.

For example, a common repair is replacing broken gears in a Singer sewing machine. There may be between two and six gears depending on the model. Always replace gears in sets. So, you have the cost of the gears. But you also have the cost of removing the shaft, doing the gear install, reassembling, and recalibrating the entire machine. Such a repair would add between $25 and $100 to the Tune Up fee. So, you can see a part time business doing sewing machine repair can be very profitable.

Long ago, I started doing repairs in my garage. Within thirty days, I had serviced 5 sewing machines and earned $200. I was thrilled. Over the next few months, machines kept coming in.

Since I was only working part time, I could not keep up. So, I had my son, then 14 years old, sit with me to help me. My first year in business, I serviced 153 sewing machines and sergers. I was still doing sewing machine repair less than ten hours a week. -- That is part time.

Going from part time to full time is easy. Just do more repairs. The possibilities of earning $50 an hour or even $75 an hour today are very real.

Obviously, I would not be training technicians today, if I had not made the move to full time. Between my three sewing machine stores and my occasional garage service, we currently service over 250 machines per month. We also sell loads of new and used sewing machines.

Students in our Correspondence Institute come from all over the world.  Africa, Europe, Brittain, Australia, South America, Indonesia, and of course the United States and Canada.  Students who have attended our Live Institute have travelled from most states in the U.S. and several foreign countries.  Some students look to build their own businesses.  But several manufacturers, design companies, universities, sewing machine dealers, and mission groups have sent employees to train or fine tune their service skills.    We have even enjoyed several avid sewers who yearned to expand their horizons and care for their own machines.

In a nutshell, you may want to learn sewing machine repair to fix your own sewing machines, as a fantastic hobby, as a technician for another company, or as a full or part-time business. In any case, your best source of training is Fix Sewing Machines Institute.
